WASHINGTON, June 30 -- The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has warned that Viagra can lead to erectile dysfunction.
Viagra is approved to treat erectile dysfunction and also improve the ability of men to achieve and maintain erections.
But some experts say the FDA has failed to warn the public about the drug's serious risks.
The FDA said the company's statement is based on an analysis of more than 6,000 patients in a study that did not include a causal link to erectile dysfunction.
The agency's action came more than five years ago.
In a letter to doctors and pharmacies, Dr. Steven Galson, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said the drug is "not the product of an illegitimate pharmaceutical company."
The company's warning was based on the study that analyzed data from more than 2,300 men and women. Dr. Galson said the results showed a link between erectile dysfunction and Viagra.
The study found that men taking Viagra had lower rates of ED and other symptoms, including anxiety and headaches. But erectile dysfunction drugs also cause a loss of libido, a loss of muscle tension, and impotence.
